About the Organization

The Kilimanjaro Project for AFR100 (the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative) is a country-led effort to bring 100 million hectares of land in Africa into restoration by 2030. It aims to accelerate restoration to enhance food security, increase climate change resilience and mitigation, and combat rural poverty. AFR100 is a partnership of 33 African governments and numerous technical and financial partners. Led, managed and supported by Terramatch, One Tree Planted, World Resource Institute and Bezos Earth Fund, the initial stage of the grant selected 100 African forest, landscape and restoration programmes or organisations. We were one of the lucky recipients of this grant and are proud to be part of this larger cohort of tree-enthusiast across Africa. Under this grant we will propagate 60,000 indigenous trees in our nurseries, and plant them along riparian zones in Arusha & Kilimanjaro regions to restore the rivers and their ecosystems. Then, under the Fairtree Pay to Grow incentive, we encourage local community members we engage as “growers” to ensure the trees reach 2-year maturity. Growers are paid incrementally for each tree’s growth and survival every 3 months for 2 years, by tracking the tree on the Tree Tracker app proving the tree is still growing.
